Hello Everyone! My name is Sabina Hoover. I currently work as an independent optometrist at Eye Doctor’s Optical Outlets on Kennedy Boulevard right at the intersection of Henderson Boulevard. We are famously located in the same plaza as Medi-Weightloss. I also work at the Optical Outlets in Carrollwood where the Starbucks is located, which is important, since you can grab of cup of java to fuel yourself while you are filling out your history forms in the waiting room!

For my first blog post, I wanted to introduce to the world! I was born in St. Louis, Missouri where I lived until graduating from high school. I then moved to Lawrence, Kansas where I became a Jayhawk (University of Kansas), graduating with my Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 2005. I made the move back to St. Louis shortly thereafter where I worked at Wal-Mart as an optician and then as a liaison at Monsanto (now Bayer). I was recruited for the Monsanto position due to my background in biology. It was a great experience, because I had never worked in a corporate setting before. I worked at both Wal-Mart and Monsanto for about four years before realizing I needed to pursue my passion, optometry. I met my husband at Monsanto. After getting married, he encourage me to apply to optometry school.

I started studying for the optometry school admission exam called OAT. I definitely had to retake the exam a couple of times since I had been out of school for so long. I needed to review all of the material again. I did get a good score and applied to several schools, and decided to stay in my hometown to get my optometry degree at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.

I had the opportunity to travel all over the country, including Ada, Oklahoma, Chicago, Illinois, Largo, FL, and Marine Corps Base Hawaii for rotations in my fourth year of optometry school. Living on Oahu for three months was by far the most memorable experience. I would learn a lot during clinic, and then go explore the island in the evenings and on weekends. It’s so breathtaking there and I highly recommend visiting. I also rotated in Largo, FL, where I gained experience and networked and then decided to move to Florida to embark on my career!

I initially worked for a Lakeland, FL ophthalmology multi-disciplinary practice with specialties in retina, cornea, glaucoma and my own specialty, contact lenses. I learned to love Lakeland, but wanted a change to the Tampa Bay area. I then networked and found myself where I am today. I live in South Tampa and work in both South Tampa and Carrollwood. I feel I have the best of both worlds! Hopefully you can come visit me and tell me about your experiences!
